No offense..Coffey doesn't come close to Orr as an overall player. I should have said..no defense. Coffey played in the gogo 80's in the wild wild west..Orr and Lemieux only wish they could have played in this division. Coffey was a wonderful skater..full stop..the rest belongs to Robert Gordon Orr. Overall in every area of the game he excelled and don't forget..he never played a healthy game in the NHL. His injuries started in OHL and really got bad his first season.

That's just it..his skating was close. Nothing else came close. Most wouldn't put Coffey on the top six dmen of all time..thus he is no where near Orr. Coffey could skate..he wasn't in the same league as Orr. I carefully read what you wrote..debated whether or not to respond. It makes me shake my head when anyone says Coffey is close to Orr..his skating was close..nothing, nothing else.

his scoring was ridiculous so i would say he comes close to his skating and offensive skill. he was a better skater then orr. but orr was the ocmplete package and shake your head all you want. he was close, meaning he had some things orr did, but was no way even close to orr. he was the closet resemblance to orr thats what i shouldve said.

Cool..I agree that Coffey's scoring was outstanding, I loved watching him free wheel back in the day..live and on tv. One stat I find that puts this oiler team in perspective. Fuhr go 14 assists in 45 games in 83-84, that extrapolates out to a 25 point 80 game season..for a goalie!!!!

This guy was the best player ever, hands down! If it wasn't for his knee injury which forced him out early, he would have gone down as the "Great One". Gretzky can't even hold a candle to this guy!

ya I am a huge Gretzky fan but even I admit Orr is the greatest ever. Gretzky had the team around him. If team canada had orr in 72 it wouldn't have been as close as it was. Orr on that huge surface my god. Imagine if Orr played 10 more years what his stats would look like.

No doubt in my mind. Bobby was the best hockey player ever. He took every aspect and mastered it.
I was always #4 when I was growing up because of him. In all sports.
Now my 10 year old twin sons idolize him thanks to these clips.

Ask Gordie Howe, ask Montreal Gazette HOF NHL columnist Red Fisher, and then ask HOFer Milt Schmidt. Between those three guys, they've witnessed NHL hockey from the 1920's to the present, and ALL three of them say Bobby Orr is the best player they ever saw. A team of 5 Bobby Orrs would beat a team of 5 Gretzkys or a team of 5 of Anyone Elses. No player of any professional team sport ever CONTROLLED games like Orr did. No other professional team athlete made fools of the opposition to the point where crowds could be heard audibly laughing, both at Boston Garden and on the road. You know you're watching greatness when you're watching something you've never seen before or since. That would be Bobby Orr. END OF STORY.

Paul Coffey may have been as fast a straight-line (only) skater as Orr, but he couldn't turn, corner, stick-handle or shoot as well as Orr, nor could he exhibit these skills while at top speed like Orr. Most have to slow down to maintain control, but Orr did not.
Coffey...make that Coughie...also didn't play much defence, had terrible +/- numbers, and unlike Orr, never once led the NHL in scoring.

With all due respect, and I mean that, Lidstrom is maybe...maybe...75% of Orr. I agree that Lidstrom is the greatest defenseman of the current generation. But he does literally nothing as well as Orr did it. We can go by the opinions of players past and present, who've lived long enough to have seen literally all of the game's greats play. Milt Schmidt ('30's thru today), Gordie Howe ('40's thru today) and HOF NHL writer Red Fisher (50's thru today) all say Orr's the best ever. 'Nuff said.

well, that's hard to say since he only played against them in '76 when they sent less than their best and orr was past his peak still, a good read on the 72 summit series by Jack Ludwig suggests that orr was (is) peerless - and the soviet players knew this, too

I like the analogy of Orr to Secretariat. However, your comment about Gretzky is over the top, no need to denigrate to make your point. Gretzky was a GREAT player, just not as uniquely skilled and dominant as Orr.
